Seriously, can’t I just stay still for a minute? Well, technically, I have been in Columbus, Ohio for over 5 years (a record for me) and it has been a blast. Now, it is time to make a move and what better place than Colombia, right?

So I imagine the half of you who do not know me very well are saying “What the hell!” The other half of you who do know me very well are saying “What the hell! He’s at it again!”

It’s been over 15 years since the last time I had an itch to go. That time took me to the Dominican Republic which was a life changing experience. I learned a new language and learned how to survive in a culture that isn’t my own. More importantly, I gained a profound understanding of what’s truly important in life. Experiences surrounding family, friends and basic human dignity became a cornerstone of my own values.

So you’re probably asking yourself “What’s the plan and why Colombia?”. Well, the plan is simple enough. I’m calling this a sabbatical with a bit of a twist. A typical sabbatical is generally a break or respite from work or a routine. I’m actually trading in the corporate 9-to-5 job for an opportunity to expand my mind and, as a result, my options.

My goals are to:

  • Improve my mind by spending more time reading and studying
  • Put together a plan that will afford me the opportunity to travel the world while working
  • Seek out opportunities to mentor others and learn from those I meet along the way

Why Colombia? Frankly, I have 10+ years of speaking Spanish fluently so I might as well leverage that ability.  And, despite what some may believe, Colombia is a very different country than its history would suggest; great weather, affordable cost of living, and lots of culture to experience. The journey begins in Colombia but will take me to other parts of South America and eventually Southeast Asia and beyond.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned and live vicariously through my mind.
